Flint Mayor Proposes $324,000 Tree Removal Program

Staff Report / Flintlocal.org

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley has proposed a resolution to allocate $324,000 in ARPA funds to create a Tree Removal Matching Funds Program. This initiative, which will be presented to the Flint City Council on Wednesday, October 9, aims to help residents remove hazardous trees from their private properties.

Under this program, Flint residents who contribute up to $1,000 towards the removal costs of hazardous trees will be eligible to receive matching funds, also up to $1,000. Additionally, residents who qualify for the City of Flint Homeowners Property Exemption (HOPE) program can receive up to $1,000 for tree removal without needing to provide matching funds.

Mayor Neeley commented that many trees in Flint's aging tree canopy have surpassed their life expectancy and are becoming safety risks as limbs decay and fall. He emphasized that enhancing public safety and improving residents' quality of life in neighborhoods is a priority for his administration.

If approved by the City Council, the City of Flint Department of Public Works will seek proposals from tree service companies for the tree removal work. Following this, there will be a four-week application period for Flint residents interested in the matching funds program.

In addition to the new tree removal initiative, a separate ARPA-funded program is already in place for maintaining city-owned trees and replacing damaged sidewalks in Flint neighborhoods. This program includes assessing sidewalks impacted by tree roots and performing maintenance or removal of street trees. Contracts have been awarded for various tasks, including sidewalk assessment, tree services, and sidewalk paving, totaling over $3.3 million to multiple vendors. Ongoing work is taking place throughout Flint.
