Flint Reintroduces Ambulance Service After 20 Years
Staff Report / Flintlocal.org
The City of Flint has reintroduced its own ambulance service for the first time in over 20 years, starting on Tuesday, October 1. This decision aims to address what city officials describe as unacceptable wait times for emergency medical assistance.
On the first day of service, the ambulance responded to various incidents, including a vehicle accident with injuries, an epileptic seizure, and a patient having difficulty breathing. Mayor Sheldon Neeley stated that the service could ultimately save lives.
City officials expressed that the reactivation of the ambulance service was necessary due to the challenges faced by the existing private ambulance system in Genesee County, which often operates with limited resources, sometimes having only one ambulance available for Flint and its surrounding areas.
Mayor Neeley emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “When I was informed of the dire situation facing Flint residents due to the county-wide ambulance shortage, I immediately directed my team to bring an ambulance service back in-house within the Flint Fire Department.” He praised Chief Theron Wiggins and his team for their swift action in launching the service, highlighting their commitment to safeguarding the health of Flint residents.
